For some of us, the last Monday in November means the Banquet of the Bakers Livery Company at the Mansion House, the residence of the Lord Mayor of London, and thus our donning white tie and tails, or else black tie and DJ. Indeed one of our number sported a silk top hat, which happily on our walk through the City streets occasioned no stir - always a good sign. This, our fourth invitation, was taken up by a pleasing mixture of new faces and old hands. The atmosphere inside the building being as amazing as the decor.

With so many of our events breaking records for attendance, it was perhaps inevitable that one of them would be, shall we say, a little under-subscribed. Our dinner and social at the end of October at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blackfriars was not a vast gathering, but there was ample compensation from a very fine set dinner in their Chinese Cricket Ground Restaurant (don't ask!) and particularly good conversation from those bold enough to face the challenge of Chinese cuisine (pictured left).

A productive evening at the Farmers Club

Our members enjoy a 'black tie' event, especially one at a traditional London club, so the seeds of success were sown well before October 18th, when we met for dinner at the Farmers Club, and the evening could not have gone better. Though not large, the venue has a charming atmosphere, and our private dining room looked very elegant - as did our large contingent. The food was notable for its quality, and the club is proud that it is all sourced from British farms. We were delighted to conclude this enjoyable evening in the cosy bar!

The National Liberal Club is undoubtedly the most popular of all our venues, such that our dinner there in late June was heavily over-subscribed and it seemed a nice idea to arrange another event at the end of September. This too attracted a full complement for dinner in the splendid Club Dining Room, with many others joining us for drinks afterwards. The weather did not encourage use of the long terrace as it had in the summer, but as the picture (left) shows that the bar has a great atmosphere - as well as reasonable prices!

The Threadneedle Hotel, where we convened for our late August dinner and social, was originally a large bank in the heart of the City of London and it shows! Their restaurant is supervised by the notable chef, Marco Pierre White so the food is excellent, and the surroundings opulent (see left), but it is one of the pleasantest and most relaxing of the venues we have graced, and despite the grandeur, it is not unduly expensive. A good place for a night out!
